SUBJECT: CLARIFICATION ON STAND AND POSITION WITH REGARDS TO THE DEMANDS OF COMANGO WHICH REPRESENTS A COALITION OF 52 NGOS
Dear Dato’ Seri,
Kindly allow us to introduce ourselves. We are a group of young professionals who have formed this movement to enhance the inter-faith relationship and to be the voice that seeks questions on behalf of the rest in Malaysia.
Before we proceed to the crust of the matters itself, Take The Lead Movement thanks your goodself and also extends an apology in the case of this letter’s unintentional role of being a hindrance amidst your every busy schedule.
In addressing the purpose of this letter, we are certain, and kindly ignore the overzealous approval of your knowledge, that your goodself is aware of COMANGO, or the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the UPR Process, which is a coalition of 54 NGOs.
The reports submitted to the International Bodies and the Coalition’s subsequent statements in the media has given the us, Malaysians, a clear indication of its struggle and attempts to exert and practice freedom of religion, gain recognition for the Lesbian Gay Bisexuals and Transsexuals community and to empower international laws in a way which it overrides the current legal system when there is an overlap of legislations.
Our movement is against any such notions being implemented or as much as being granted the liberty to be discussed. It is our understanding of that our fellow brothers and sisters from the Islamic faith have expressed their disgust at the aforementioned suggestions. In fact, it is in clear contradiction with the Federal Constitution which explicitly states Islam to be the official religion of the country.
Involvement of your previous allies and acquaintances, in obvious references to SUARAM and BERSIH, has raised questions as to what exactly your stand and opinion on this matter. We humbly request and gently urge a consistent and firm statement with regards to the above matter.
Your goodself begun your political career as a youth who championed Islamic rights. In case memory hesitates to serve you well at this point. Totally understandable with a schedule like yours.
Your answer is important to us as we affirm the belief of our forefathers in the democratic process which emphasizes an important role for the Opposition Leader. Perhaps, this step or our movement is seeking an answer from you would propel the Opposition Leader post in equal terms to a Minister as it is the case in most Commonwealth countries.
