How, or why, the Bible was translated into Bahasa Melayu. This is a new one from the blog Anwar Ibrahim Dot Com that thrives in digging up ghosts from DSAI's past. This one is of Anwar Ibrahim in 1984 when he was the Agriculture Minister. I still remember how he told us reporters not to call him YB, just Saudara Anwar would do. Those were the days, man. In the context of today's controversy surrounding the High Court ruling
allowing the use of "allah" by Catholics in Malaysia, this brief
footage is enlightening. Anwar speaks of why the translation of the
Bible into the Malay language (bahasa Melayu) was so important to
Stamford Raffles that it became the first task the colonial master
assigned to Abdullah Munshi.
